Legal Geek 2024: Enhancing Forensic Accident Investigation with Immersive Visualisation.

We were thrilled to take the stage at Legal Geek 2024 on 11th September in Amsterdam to share a landmark case study that demonstrates the transformative power of immersive technology in the legal sector.

In this 10-minute talk, Resol-VR founder, Dan Riley, walks through a real-world fatal road traffic collision and how Resol-VR’s interactive 3D visualisation helped accelerate the resolution of a complex, three-year-long case—while also showing what’s possible when forensic data is brought to life in virtual environments.

🧠 What’s the case about?

The case involved a collision between an articulated lorry carrying aviation fuel and a supermarket delivery van in Drum, Scotland. What followed was a highly complex investigation spanning criminal and civil proceedings, costing millions in legal fees, and with no clear visual evidence to support a conclusive outcome.

That is, until we were brought in.

🔍 What did Resol-VR do?

Working alongside KNC Forensics, we created a real-time 3D reconstruction of the incident, grounded in hard forensic data—tachographs, weather reports, police surveys, and more. This wasn’t just a static animation. It was an interactive experience designed for both PC and Virtual Reality, allowing legal professionals to step into the scene, explore different viewpoints, and fully understand how the collision occurred.

💥 What was the impact?

The results speak for themselves:

  • The case, previously dragging on for over three years, settled within two weeks of the visualisation being submitted.

  • Damages of £11–13 million / €13-15 million were awarded, based largely on the clarity the reconstruction provided.

  • The judge noted he would have welcomed the visualisation in the courtroom had the civil case gone to trial.

  • Investigators even speculated that the criminal case (resulting in a no-fault verdict) may have had a different outcome had this tool been available earlier.

🚀 What’s next?

Following the success of this case, we launched Resol-VR and this very website as a dedicated venture to bring immersive legal technology into mainstream practice.

Alongside providing our Visualisation for Litigation services, and adding context to legal contracts with Augmented Reality-based Legal Design, we’re also developing a Virtual 3D Arbitration Room—a cloud-based interactive platform for hearings, collaboration, and case preparation - with additional plans for Virtual Courtrooms.

If you're interested in partnering with us, investing, or just want to learn more, we’d love to hear from you.
